EMDR THERAPY
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR therapy can help you:
Reduce Emotional Distress: EMDR helps lower the emotional intensity associated with distressing memories, making them less overwhelming.
Process Traumatic Memories: It helps you work through and make sense of painful experiences by integrating them more healthily.
Shift Negative Beliefs: EMDR helps shift negative beliefs and perceptions about oneself that have developed from past traumas.
Improve Emotional Regulation: It improves your ability to manage and respond to emotions in a balanced way.
Enhance Coping Skills: EMDR can strengthen coping mechanisms and resilience, aiding in better handling of future stressors.
Restore Personal Strengths: It helps you tap into your inner strengths that may have been overshadowed by trauma.
Promote Overall Well-being: By addressing and resolving past trauma, EMDR supports improved mental health and overall life satisfaction.
Facilitate Self-Awareness: It encourages greater self-awareness and understanding of how past experiences influence current behavior and emotions.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, commonly known as EMDR, is a therapy specifically designed to address unprocessed traumatic memories. When exposed to a stressful (or traumatic event), cortisol increases and our bodies respond with a mobilized response of feeling, moving, running, protecting, and shaking (fight/flight). Cortisol levels return to baseline, and the body relaxes into a rest and digest state. However, when the body doesn't get to complete the action necessary to stay safe, it remains in high activation as if the distressing event is ongoing. EMDR therapy helps the brain revisit and complete the processing of memories from past events
In EMDR therapy, you need not discuss the issue in great detail or complete additional assignments between sessions. Unlike other therapies that target changing your emotions, thoughts, or behaviors linked to these issues, EMDR allows your brain to naturally engage in its healing process. For some clients, EMDR often requires fewer sessions compared to other psychotherapies, offering a more focused and potentially faster resolution to their concerns.
